Our SJSM Church Library is a space that seeks to...

  • ... encourage and nurture the growth and formation of a community of thinking Christians who base their lives on Scripture.
  • ... support SJSM's Christian Education programmes e.g. Know the Word, theological talks, talks on Christian living, et cetera.
  • ... support the faith formation of new believers (these would include those who have come to faith through Alpha or otherwise).

Would you consider practising the spiritual discipline of study in your pursuit of God?

Background

It was as far back as the 1980s that our church library was first conceived. Then, a small collection of books was housed in a small room in the church office next to the Breakfast Hall.

The relocated church library that you see today was a result of thoughtful planning carried out during the time when Christ Sanctuary was being constructed. One round of renovation has taken place since (2011-2012) which saw the glass panels opening up the cloistered space to the outside world and revealing its hidden treasures contained within.

Crisis! Covid brought about the closure of the library and the pandemic years plunged the library into the deep sleep of hibernation. Post-pandemic, as the world started to wake up around it, talk emerged about the conversion of the library into a storeroom or the books placed in some kind of storage facility.

Physical libraries today are endangered spaces. They are constantly under the threat of digitalisation.

We invite you to consider seeing the library as being more than a physical collection of books. This is reductivist. Think of our library as a living space to build community and grow a treasure trove of history and of knowledge.

This year in 2024, our library is coming out of hibernation and entering into a new season of life :) Let us pray for its blossoming!

  • Enhanced services
  • Renewed borrowing policy
  • A more integrated vision
