About the Season of Advent on the Church Calendar

Advent refers to the coming of Christ. The church remembers the first Advent as described in Luke 1, culminating in Jesus’ birth, and we look for His coming in glory, Jesus’ second coming, with great anticipation. In the church calendar, we set aside the four Sundays before Christmas to focus on this coming of Jesus. The Advent Wreath contains 5 candles (one candle lit on each Sunday and the fifth on Christmas Day) and is placed on the Communion table in the Sanctuary as a visual reminder to us that the Lord will surely come again. He came the first time to save us from our sins and He will come again to judge the living and the dead. He will take charge as the King of kings and His kingdom will have no end.

Christmas Day (25 Dec)  is Day 1 of a 12-day season, Christmastide, which ends on Epiphany Eve (5 Jan). While Advent is traditionally a more solemn observation, Christmastide is associated with festivity; its liturgical colours are white and gold, which together symbolise celebration, peace, joy, and the triumph of God’s great work of salvation. During this period, we celebrate the miracle of the incarnation of Christ.
